History of the TCS New York City Marathon

The first marathon was organized by the New York Road Runners in September 1970. There were 127 participants and 55 finishers, and the event took place in Central Park. By 1976, the marathon had outgrown Central Park and occurred throughout NYC’s five boroughs with 2,090 participants and 1,549 finishers. By 1997, there were more than 30,000 finishers; 2019 saw more than 50,000 finishers. Today, the New York City Marathon garners live TV coverage and the attention of paying sponsors (like Tata Consultancy Services). There is even a division called Team for Kids , which raises money for the New York Road Runners youth programs.
