Ways to Get Around in New York City

Getting around New York City is simple, with multiple transportation options available. You will use more than one of these transportation options depending on where and when you are going. When the weather is nice, enjoy a walk to a nearby destination. Raise your hand and grab a taxi for a classic New York experience. Ride with the locals on the subway. Or, finally, hire a private car service for a luxury experience.

Walking

For those that live in New York, walking is the go-to method of getting around New York. The city is compact, and you will find it easy to get around the neighborhoods. Native New Yorkers walk fast, so be prepared to either keep up or be passed. Spring and fall are the best times of the year to walk. Summer can get quite hot, and winter can get uncomfortably cold.

Taxi

An iconic image of New York is the yellow taxi. Thousands of them are all over the city, making them easy to use and convenient. Look for one with a lit sign on the roof. This means that it is available. Raise your hand and flag the taxi down. Tell the driver where you want to go, and off you go. You can pay with either cash or a card.

Private Car Service

Consider booking a private car service if you want a luxury, high-end transportation option. Your hotel’s concierge service can make the arrangements for you. These services typically use black town cars or SUVs. They will pick you up at the door of your hotel and take you to the door of your desired location. This reduces the amount of walking required and eliminates you having to drive. Your driver will remain ready for when you desire to travel again.

Ferry

An extensive ferry system can help you get around New York. There is the Staten Island Ferry, NYC Ferry, and the NY Waterway. The Staten Island Ferry has been in operation since 1905. It is a staple for commuters and a must for sightseeing tourists. The NYC Ferry provides transportation between Manhattan, Queens, and Brooklyn. Finally, the NY Waterway has four routes that provide transportation between New York and New Jersey.

Subway

The New York subway system is the largest in North America, with 25 routes and almost 500 stations. This equates to just under 700 miles of subway track with cars operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. It is the most used transportation system by the locals, so riding the subway can give you a local’s perspective of the city.

Car Rental

It is possible to rent a car when exploring the city. However, traffic can be heavy and delayed during peak travel times. There is also a lack of available parking. Renting a car is an excellent option if you want to make quick trips outside of the city. This gives you the freedom to come and go as you like.

Make your trip to New York enjoyable by planning to use more than one of these ways to get around the city.
