When to Visit New York City

There is something to see and do in New York no matter what time of year you decide to visit. The city experiences all four seasons, creating a noticeable change in the weather and temperature. Depending on what you are hoping to do, there is a season that is ideal for your visit. Perhaps you desire to spend time outside during spring or fall. Maybe you want to experience the magic of the holiday season during the winter months.

Spring

Spring is the most popular time of year to visit New York. Early spring can see cold temperatures between 35 and 50 degrees Fahrenheit. However, later spring months warm up nicely. There is also a lack of humidity that is typically present during the summer months. The spring months also bring blooming flowers and trees. This creates plenty of natural color in the city. You could attend a basketball game during March Madness at Madison Square Garden. There is also Fleet Week in late May, where US Navy, Coast Guard, and Marine Corps members are celebrated throughout the city.

Fall

The city has a warm and comforting feeling during the fall months. The season typically sees temperatures between 63 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit. The falling temperatures also see a reduction in humidity from the summer. Visit during October, and you will see Halloween decorations all over the city. Visit in November, and you could see the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade live and in person. There is also the New York City Marathon. It runs through all five boroughs, but watching from the Upper East Side is a truly enjoyable experience. If you catch the weather right, you can see the lush green leaves turn to vibrant red, orange, and yellow colors.

Summer

The city comes to life during the summer. New Yorkers leave their homes and spend time lounging on a blanket in one of the many parks. Join them and soak up the culture as you attend free concerts and performances. The weather is hot, between 71 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit. The summer season is one of the best times to visit, with plenty of events and exhibits to attend. In addition, many restaurants open their outdoor dining, and rooftop bars open up during the summer.

Winter

The temperatures during winter in New York City can get cold. You can expect temperatures to reach their coldest, between 28 and 39 degrees Fahrenheit. It is also common for it to snow during the winter. This can leave the city sidewalks and streets full of slush or ice, making walking more challenging. However, this is hardly noticeable as you admire the city's many holiday decorations and displays. Most famously, the ice skating rink and enormous Christmas tree are at Rockefeller Center. Then, the world-famous party and ball drop are on New Year's Eve.

You will enjoy visiting New York City at any time of the year. The best time for your visit will depend on what you hope to do.
